There are two big important planets in the Warcraft fiction: Azeroth, home to the humans, and Draenor, home to the Orcs. Those big burly orcs I mentioned? They’re actually big burly orcs from outer space. Warcraft, at a first glance, looks (and mostly is) about as traditionally “fantasy” as you can get: There’s knights in shiny armour, castles, mages casting spells and big burly orcs. Neither is it based on the more obscure but iconic-amongst-gamers Warcraft III, the third game in the franchise that told the story of a human prince named Arthas Menethil, who became corrupted by evil and fell to the forces of villainy, rising as the terrifying Lich King - the story most fans would love to see told on screen, and even expected when the film was getting under way all those years ago. And yet, surprisingly, Warcraft the movie is not based on World of Warcraft or its various story expansions. Whether you’ve never touched it or sunk hundreds and hundreds of hours into the insanely popular MMORPG over the past 12 years it’s been running, odds are you have heard about the pop culture phenom at some point (or seen that South Park episode about it). There is only one reason we’re getting, of all things, a Warcraft film in the year of our Lord 2016: World of Warcraft. No, really! It’s not actually based on the hit World of Warcraft video game. Don’t worry, we’re here to help! Here’s what you need to know about the weird world of Azeroth before you start your journey (into a movie theatre). After surviving the crash, Velen was quick to offer his people's aid to the Alliance, as he'd seen in a previous vision, and join them in the fight to drive the Burning Legion from Outland. The Warcraft movie is nearly here, and if you don’t know your Gul’dans from your Garonas, everything in the trailers probably looks monstrously confusing. The Draenei successfully used the Exodar to depart Draenor, but not before the vessel suffered damage, resulting in it crash-landing on Azeroth. ![]() When the Blood Elves seized Tempest Keep (a Naaru fortress), the Draenei stormed and captured one of its satellites, the Exodar. When Illidan Stormrage and the Blood Elves arrived, the Draenei saw their opportunity to escape. Velen and many Draenei untouched by fel energies would go into hiding. The Orcs would go on to slaughter most of the Draenei and mutate many of the survivors into broken forms of their former glory. He commanded his protege, Gul'dan, to corrupt the Orcs and send them into murderous blood lust. ![]() This continued until Kil'jaeden learned of the Draenei presence on Draenor. They met and engaged in some minimal trade with the shamanic Orcs, but both races respectably kept to themselves without incident. It wasn't long before Velen was betrayed by one of his closest friends, who'd succumbed to Sargeras' offer and informed Archimonde and Kil'jaeden of his plan. He was to gather all who'd listen to him and bring the Crystal to Argus' tallest mountain on the longest day of the year. It offered respite for Velen and gave him instructions for how to escape Argus. It told him it was one of a race of sentient energy beings, the Naaru, whose goal was to stop the Burning Legion and Sargeras. In his despair while trying to formulate a way off the planet, Velen's head was filled with a voice. RELATED: World of Warcraft: Ashbringer Chronicled the History of WoW's Most Legendary Weapon Velen knew the only chance for himself and the few he'd convinced to listen was to escape from Argus before they were hunted down. They'd soon turn the Eredar population into a race of demon-worshipping warlocks. ![]() The two other leaders readily dismissed Velen's concern and proceeded to pledge themselves to Sargeras. He saw the dark fate that awaited his people if they accepted Sargeras' bargain and immediately attempted to warn Archimonde and Kil'jaeden. After coming into contact with the Ata'mal Crystal, Velen experienced a vision of the future.
